Starting from “12- steps skincare routine” to “snail-slime skin care“, Korean skincare never failed to intrigue me. So when I heard innisfree is opening their first store in Canada, I couldn’t wait but run! Although they have great collection but the first thing caught my eyes was their range of green tea for clear skin. Being confused on what to buy what to not, I bought a whole Green Tea Hydration Set which I am going to review today!

About the brand: Innisfree

Innisfree, founded by Sunghwan Suh, is Korea’s first natural beauty brand which was launched in 2000. The brand’s mission is to deliver beauty products made from the natural and pure ingredients of an island named Jeju.

Jeju island is known for its clear air, unpolluted water and enriched soil. Innisfree discovered 12 ingredients from the island’s natural sources such as land, sea, water, trees and flowers. The brand incorporates all those pure and high quality ingredients in their beauty line and promises healthy skin to customers.

All of their products are made from natural elements of Jeju island. After winning hearts in Asia, the brand has now stores in Australia, United States and most recently in Canada.

The star ingredients

You must be thinking, “star ingredient? easy-peasy, its green tea!” Well what if I say you are not completely right?

Yes it’s green tea but not the one we drink every day is used in this innisfree green tea hydration set. Instead innisfree uses a special breed of green tea which they developed and planted on their USDA-organic farm on Jeju island, after studying 2,401 varieties for 10 years. Surprised much?

Why they did not go for the traditional one? Good question! The simple answer is they were looking for something which is not limited to taste and specialized in skin moisture. This beauty green tea they call has antioxidants and 16 hydrating amino acids that help with skin hydration.

Also they double squeeze these organic beauty tree leaves to ensure to extract all the moisture content for better skin moisturizing effect. These fresh green tea leave water is 3.5 times better than the one we drink. Because it is more enriched with antioxidants and amino acids.

So, from the ingredients the innisfree green tea hydration set looks quite promising, but does it really work? We will find out in few minutes!

But before that lets have some questions answered.

Is green tea good for skin?

Green tea has a good reputation of improving skin health. It has an abundant antioxidant called Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). This polyphenol scavenges the free radicals caused from external factors such as stress, UV and pollution. As free radicals cause skin damage and premature aging, green tea saves skin from and acts as an potent anti aging ingredient.

In addition, EGCG is anti-androgenic which means it controls the excess sebum production and prevents acne. And the antibacterial property of green tea can work like magic on oily skin and clogged pores.

Green tea usually has L-theanine in it, which is an amino acid known for its anti-inflammatory property. In one study it was found that applying L-theanine topically on rats showed promising results to treat acute cutaneous inflammation.

However, the beauty green tea used in this innisfree hydration set has not only one but 16 amino acids! More the merrier!

Does green tea make your skin glow?

Green tea does help to improve skin complexion. The Catechins named EGCG present in green tea has antioxidant properties as I mentioned before. The antioxidant property improves the skin’s ability to repair itself to reduce sun damage.

Also EGCG has been found to reduce melanin production and can work as a potent skin whitening ingredient.

Is green tea hydrating for skin?

The polyphenol EGCG found in green tea itself shows hydrating properties. In one research it was found that EGCG actually stopped the degradation of natural Hyaluronic Acid (HA) present in the epidermis by reducing the level of hyaluronidase enzyme (which hydrolyzes HA) expression. As a result, hydration retention capacity of the skin barrier was increased.

Also green tea contains vitamins such as B2, E and K. Vitamin E is intensely hydrating for skin. It protects the skin’s barrier as a result skin looks more hydrated and plumed.

The good news in addition to these, the beauty green tea in innisfree green tea hydration set has extra sets of amino acids. That adds more hydration to skin.

Amino acids are present in the outer layer of our skin and an important part of skin’s natural moisturizing factor (NMF). It also promotes collagen and elastin production which are two important structures of our skin.

That is why it is so important to include amino acids in your skin care to maintain the level of hydration and tightness in the skin.

How to use innisfree green tea hydration set?

The innisfree green tea hydrating set comes with 4 skin care products and costs 20 C$ without tax. The set includes:

The set comes with cute packaging. Photo by innisfree

Hydrating Cleansing Foam with Green Tea : Start your innisfree hydrating routine with this foam cleanser. First cleanse your face with an oil cleanser and next use this hydrating cleanser to complete the double cleanse.

Intensive Hydrating Serum with Green Tea Seed : The serum you have to apply on your face after cleansing. Take few drops of serum and pat on your damp skin gently.

Intensive Hydrating Cream with Green Tea Seed: Then apply the moisturizer. Take a small amount on your palm and apply on your face using small circular motion.

Hydrating Sleeping Mask with Green Tea: This has to be used as the last step in your nighttime routine. Take a small amount on your palm and apply on your face like you did your moisturizer. And don’t forget to wash your face next morning. Use it 2-3 times in a week.

My personal experience with Innisfree green tea hydration set

Okay first, let’s talk about the packaging. I loved how they used super cute deep green packaging for this green tea range. It perfectly matched with the theme. The whole set comes in a green box which says “soak it up”! I would give the packaging a 9/10!

I used the whole set as my AM and PM routine for more than one month and I loved it.

This is the set I used for more than one month.

But if I have to pick one product I liked the most: it is the hydrating night mask! The night mask is really light in texture and has a subtle smell. I started noticing a difference on my skin after I started using it. My skin was softer, brighter and more hydrated next morning. I have used other high end night masks as well but this one from innisfree is still on my top 3!

My next favourite in the Innisfree green tea hydration set is the hydrating serum!

The serum is a game changer and does what it is supposed to do at an affordable price. I suffer from dehydrated skin so a hydrating serum like this is a skin saver for me. It is gooey but not sticky. And provides more than enough hydration to make your skin look fresh. Do I have to say more? I will definitely buy it again.

The average one in the innisfree green tea hydrating set is the moisturizer.

It is lightweight and didn’t make my skin look oily. However, I didn’t notice any significant change so maybe I won’t repurchase it in the future.

The only product which I thought was a waste of money was the foam cleanser. It made my skin dry instead of hydrating it. After washing with this my skin felt like there is no natural oil left behind. I had to stop using it after my third application. I hope innisfree improves it!

To wrap up…

Now the big question arises,

Would I recommend Innisfree green tea hydration set?

Definitely yes! Except the foam cleanser, I think the innisfree green tea hydration set is worth every penny and some products from the set are really worth repurchasing.
