I will start this article with a confession. I have never used any products from Drunk Elephant before. So this is a first. Due to immense hype about the F-balm electrolyte waterfacial from Drunk elephant, I thought of giving it a try. This new product is an overnight face mask. And claims to work wonder on dry and dehydrated skin. My skin is always dehydrated in winter. So I thought why not! I was pretty excited. And today I am going share with you how much it justified my excitement.
A bit about Drunk Elephant Skin Care
Drunk elephant is a natural skin care line. The CEO of this company, Tiffany Masterson believes in products that are not only healthy but also work. The aim of this skin care line is nourishing and protecting your skin with a youthful glow. It was launched in 2012 by a home staying mom (Tiffany Masterson). By 2015 it caught eyes of everyone, including celebrities.
The brand now offers a variety of skin care products. Starting from moisturizers to overnight face masks. And all of them falls under clean beauty category. Recently this natural beauty line has been bought by Shiseido. Wondering the worth? at a cost of $845 million!
The name of the company comes from a myth...
The myth says when elephants eat the fruit from Marula trees in South Africa, they get drunk due to the fermentation of fruits to alcohol. And this inspired the name “Drunk Elephant”. Innovative, right?
F-Balm Electrolyte Waterfacial and its star ingredients
The F-Balm Electrolyte Waterfacial comes in a package with the T.L.C. Framboos glycolic acid serum. From the name I think it’s obvious. This overnight mask is infused with electrolytes.
How to apply F-balm electrolyte waterfacial mask?
This overnight face mask was instructed to be used as the last step of your skin care routine. The instruction does not clearly state whether you should apply it with a moisturizer. But it does say you can use the glycolic serum beforehand for a better result.
The star ingredients of this product are:
The good things:
Coconut water : Coconut water is full of potassium and magnesium. It also contains many essential minerals. For example zinc, phosphorus, sulfur, manganese and silicon. This natural water can give your skin a splash of electrolytes. In addition, it has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory properties.
Sodium PCA : This one is a humectant. It is good for adding moisture into the upper layer of your skin from the surroundings. You can learn more about sodium PCA benefits in my previous article here
Magnesium PCA : Magnesium helps in the skin repair and regeneration. It is also a humectant like sodium PCA and enhances the hydration of skin. Read more about this ingredient here.
Not only these… F-balm electrolyte waterfacial mask also contains…
Prickly pear extract : This extract is rich in fatty acids, omega-6 and -9, and the natural antioxidant vitamin E. The extract hydrates the skin from deep. Not only that . It also contains vitamin K, which promotes skin’s elasticity.
Linolenic and linoleic acid : The two essential fatty acids (EFAs) that your body can’t synthesize on its own are linolenic acid and linoleic acid. Also known as omega-3 and omega-6. You need to provide these fatty acids from external sources to have a healthy skin. These are responsible to maintain a healthy skin barrier and hydration.
Niacinamide : Niacinamide or vitamin B3 increases the amount of natural lipids found in the skin. As a result makes the texture of your skin better. It is good for managing unwanted pigmentation. Also prevents aging.
Ceramide AP, NP EOP, NS, EOS : Ceramides are essential for hydration and a healthy skin barrier. Having a blend of ceramides is always better for the skin. Read more about ceramide and its benefits here.
Squalane: It’s all about hydration. Squalane is also known to fight with free radicals which prevents aging.
Quercetin : Quercetin is a bioflavonoid and helps to sooth skin. It also fights with free radicals which prevents skin damage.
The “not so” good things…
Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil : It is generally safe but for some people it might cause rash or irritation.
Zea mays oil : Again this one is totally safe to use. But might cause acne to certain skin types.
My personal experience…
I was pretty excited when I bought F-balm electrolyte waterfacial mask. After all, it was my first purchase from Drunk Elephant skin care line. I used this product in 3 ways:
1st: Initially I started using this night mask only with my serum and no moisturizer. My skin absorbed the product immediately. It was not greasy, everything was okay. Next day when I woke up, I saw red rashes on my cheek area. I kept using it for one week and noticed it actually made my skin more dry.
2nd: I stopped the serum, and thought of using the glycolic acid with this overnight mask, It was too dry this time. I was just trying to figure out which works the best. So I was trying different approaches. But the mask with the glycolic acid serum was extremely drying. I had to stop immediately. And my skin was still red and itchy.
3rd: This time I was using the mask after my moisturizer. It was not drying anymore. Also my skin looked hydrated next morning. Yet those red rashes were still there on my cheek. It started getting worse even after using with moisturizer. Unfortunately, I had to stop!
Will I recommend this product?
Unfortunately, I don’t think so. The F-balm electrolyte waterfacial mask made my skin more dry and red. Even after I stopped using this mask, the rashes took some time to go away. I know a lot of people are going to love the mask. But it just did not suit my dehydrated combination skin. I was really upset cause I wanted this overnight face mask to work. No hard feelings though!
