Rocky mountains, Niagara falls, polar bears, maple syrup, Ryan Reynolds- yeah, Canada is famous for these. But I wouldn’t be talking about these today. Today I will tell you the 3 best Canadian skincare brands that I tried, and you need to try too if you are a (Canadian?) zero-waste skincare freak.
But first.. why should you care to go zero waste? Cause it matters.
Going zero waste is ditching plastic bottles in skincare and opting for more eco-friendly packaging such as glass, paper. Everyone knows how harmful plastics are to nature. The plastic bottles of your favourite cleanser or shampoo can contribute about 6 kg CO2 (per kg plastic).
Another thing to keep in mind when making a zero waste skincare routine is to use as many natural ingredients as possible. Many people don’t understand, but the source and manufacturing process of any ingredient can impact nature. Also, vegan products and not tested on animals leaves less carbon footprint are beneficial to nature.
So one of the first best Canadian skincare brands I am going to talk about is Crawford skincare. It is a fully natural Toronto based skincare company. This Canadian skincare brand gifted me an entire routine (so kind of them) to try, and they are my FAVOURITE.
The kit had one moisturizing balm, one hydrating toner and a cleanser. And I will be sharing today the amazing experience I had with all of these.
Okay, I have super dehydrated skin…more dehydrated than the Sahara desert! So anything, literally anything, that has a thick texture and hydrating agents is my favourites. So when this Canadian all-natural brand told me they are sending me a moisturizing balm, I was on cloud 9.
The active ingredients of this balm are rosehip seed oil, frankincense essential oil, geranium essential oil. Rosehip oil has a ton of fatty acids in it, which strengthens the skin’s barrier. Thus it is the best choice for dehydrated, sensitive skin. The star ingredient of this balm is frankincense essential oil. It is known to treat dry skin and vanishes all the signs of ageing.
I know many of you might not like using essential oils on your face; I get you. If you have doubts, always do a patch test before using any essential oil-based products. I have sensitive skin, and I didn’t have problems with this balm.
In fact, it made my skin hydrated and plumped. However, as this balm is a bit thicker, I recommend using this in your nighttime skincare routine.
- Good for dehydrated skin
- Sensitive skins can use it
- Not only hydrates but also adds an extra glow
- Great smell
- Can not be used in day time unless its winter due to its thick texture
- Might be too thick for oily skin
- Some people might not like the essential oils
- Price is a bit expensive than normal drugstore moisturizers
Personally, I am not a fan of toners. God knows why when it comes to applying toners: I get lazy!
But I was curious about this toner, particularly as Crowford has included all interesting ingredients: rosewater, witch hazel and aloe vera. Witch hazel is something I avoid applying on my face. It makes my skin dry, but just because there are two other hydrating agents: rose water & aloe vera, I was curious how it works out.
My personal experience with the toner was OKAY. It didn’t make my skin dry, but I didn’t see any positive changes as well.
- Light texture
- Doesn’t make the skin sticky
- Two super hydrating agents
- The witch hazel can make skin dry
Believe me, when I say, the cleanser is the second most important part of your routine. It can make or break your skin.
When I received the cleansing milk from Crawford, I was so happy cause it’s been a long since I used one (I am more of a gel cleanser girl!). The texture of this cleansing milk is so yummy that it justified its name. It didn’t make my skin dry at all. And I love how smooth my face was feeling after every wash. Do you know what it means when someone with dehydrated skin says these things? It means: GO and BUY THIS NOW!
This Canadian all-natural brand has turned me into a life-long customer of theirs, and I will keep coming back to it. At least for the cleansing milk!
- Makes skin smooth and hydrated
- The texture is creamy and milky
- Doesn’t strip off the oil from the skin, skin feels hydrated right after washing
- Best for dehydrated skin
The next Canadian skincare brand I am going to talk about is Buck Naked Soap Company. The brand is well known for its natural soap bars (the name says it all). However, they gifted me a face mask to try, and I was super happy cause masking is my favourite kind of self-care.
The two ingredients of this hydration mask, which caught all my attention are blue agave and hibiscus rosa-sinensis flower extract.
I have never heard of blue agave before so did a bit of research. Apparently, it is a plant that is used to make tequila. Now you all will be like “tell us more“, I know!
Blue agave extract carries a substance called saponins. Saponins are known to be natural surfactants. They’re also one of the best known natural stimulants of hyaluronic acid, so that is why the mask is super hydrating.
The mask has hibiscus flower extract full of antioxidants, AHAs, and vitamin C and promotes elastin production (young skin, yay!). Imagine if only two ingredients of this mask are full of these wonders; how wonderful is the mask itself? Let me answer that for you.
I have been using this mask for more than 2 months, and I can say this does magic. The blue agave hydrating mask comes in a nice glass jar. It has a jelly texture, and no, it doesn’t look blue if you are thinking. The mask has a thick red jello structure and super easy to apply. It doesn’t have any smell and also the best part: when it dries, it doesn’t make your skin feel dry at all (awesome!). My skin feels super hydrated every time I use it. But if you really want to see a long term effect of this mask: use it at least 2 times a week!
I am super grateful to explore such an amazing Canadian brand and will try their other masks too for sure!
- Easy to apply
- Hydrates skin perfectly
- No bad smell although it is all-natural
- Great list of ingredients
- Easy to take off as well, doesn’t dry and stick on to face (I hate those dry face masks!)
- The glass jar might not be travel friendly
- You have to be patient and keep using it if you want to see a long term hydrating effect
Graydon Skincare is based in Toronto and known for its vegan, superfood ingredients. This Canadian brand has a range of products, and I was gifted a full routine by the brand (so lucky!).
The cleanser is specifically formulated for sensitive skin. So you can imagine how happy I was when I received it.
This cleanser’s active ingredients are niacinamide, aloe vera juice, black tea, vitamin E, K, apricot kernel oil, pink grapefruit, and blood orange. I can say the brand has done an excellent job when it comes to ingredients. They are super useful and effective to give a bright, hydrated complexion without making the skin dry. And the best part? The cleanser has a pH range of 4.5-5.5.
My skin is very picky when it comes to cleansers. And when your skin says NO, you have to listen to it, right? But luckily, my skin loved the aloe milk cleanser cause it’s super hydrating. It has a pleasant smell, but it’s not too intense. I felt a change in my skin after I used it for 2 weeks, and I am still using it without any issues.
- Doesn’t strip natural moisturizer
- Smells good
- Contains all the good ingredients in one place
- The pH is close to the skin’s pH
- The best option for sensitive, dehydrated skin
- Some people might not like the fact that it leaves a creamy, smooth feeling after washing. Surprisingly a lot of people like the dry effect cleansers leave (which is super dangerous) cause it makes them feel like the face has been “cleaned” (weird!)
Before I proceed with my review, I must admit, I love the name of this serum!
When I received this serum, the first thing I noticed in its ingredient list is BOTANICAL RETINOL!
If you are like me and wondering what the hell is this, let me help you. Botanical retinol is an extract from natural moth bean seed. It is a wild plant that is native to India and Pakistan.
Botanical retinol is considered one of the natural alternatives to retinol (Vitamin A) as it stimulates epidermal cell renewal and reduces wrinkles overnight. But the advantage is unlike retinol, which causes skin irritation, botanical retinol has excellent skin compatibility.
Besides botanical retinol, the serum has peptides, plant-based collagen, vitamin C and hyaluronic acid. When I read the whole ingredient list, I immediately realized the inspiration for this super cool name! I mean, who wouldn’t look bright like a full moon after using this super cool serum? All thanks go to this Canadian skincare brand yayy!
Now the question is: did I turned into a full moon? Metaphorically yes! The serum improved my complexion, also reduced some acne spots which I had recently.
- Unique, plant-based ingredients
- Lightweight and the watery texture gets absorbed easily
- Doesn’t irritate the skin
- Smells amazing
- Improves skin’s complexion
- Comes in an eco-friendly glass bottle
- The texture might be too light for some people
I love the fact that the Berry Rich face cream from this Canadian skincare brand has two of my favourite ingredients: vegan probiotics and cocoa butter. I mean, as soon as I think about hydrating products, the first name that comes to me is cocoa water!
And what not to love about probiotics? Probiotic-based skincare products help balance the skin’s microbiome and reduce ageing signs by stimulating skin renewal. As a result, your skin looks more youthful and radiant.
I used this cream in my nighttime skincare routine. And the best part? It reduced one step of my routine cause I didn’t have to use an eye cream separately. Also, the facial cream is hydrating but surprisingly not greasy at all. My skin felt radiant and hydrated after I started using this cream. So yeah, I loved using this cream BERRY BERRY much!
- Lightweight yet hydrating
- Beautiful blue texture
- Works against ageing and dehydration
- Does work as an eye cream too
- Smells great
- Might not work for super dry skin
Among all these products from the natural skincare brand Graydon, I must confess, this cream is my favourite.
Ceramide is one of my most favourite ingredients since I started doing skincare. The only reason is: my dehydrated skin loves it.
Those who don’t know: ceramides can fix the damaged skin barrier. In a healthy skin barrier, ceramides keep the skin’s cells together to leak the moisture out of your skin. However, a damaged barrier lacks ceramide. As a result, the moisture keeps leaking through the skin. And that makes your skin dry.
Thus a ceramide based moisturizer is essential if you have dehydrated skin. I was super happy to try the product cause besides having the ceramides; it also has Omega-5 fatty acid. And ceramides work best when they are combined with fatty acids.
I used this cream in my day time routine as its texture is super light. I usually don’t prefer thick facial creams during the day as my face sweats a lot. The cream is an eye cream, and I love this about Graydon skincare. The brand is so focused on sustainability that it provides skincare products from sustainable resources and developes multitasker products to reduce skincare steps.
I have been using this facial cream from this natural skincare brand so far, and my face didn’t show any reaction. Instead, it looks more smooth and feels softer. After all, ceramides, right?
- Very light texture
- Can be used all over the face without getting concerned about under eye areas
- Good for sensitive skin
- Hydrates skin gently
To wrap up…
So this was my list for the 3 best Canadian all-natural skincare brands, and you should not miss any of these natural skincare brands if you are planning to go for a zero-waste, sustainable skincare routine. I am so grateful that I got the opportunity to use them, but that’s the best part of being a beauty blogger.
