Skin care mistakes: 5 Things I Wish I’d Known Earlier

From beginners to experts, there are certain skin care mistakes almost everyone is guilty of doing. I would be lying if I say I did not made any of those ever. I learnt some of them to my skin’s cost. But good news is you don’t have to. Cause today I am going to share 5 of those common skin care mistakes which I did and I don’t want you to do.

Skin care mistake 1: Washing face with hot water

One of the common skin care mistakes is washing face with super hot water. I know, I know hot water feels so good on skin. But trust me everything that feels good is not good in real (like that melting cotton candy on your tongue!).

But in real the skin care fact is : hot water makes your skin more dehydrated. I have a super dehydrated skin and I was following everything to get rid of that. But I was not having any lucks. Then i realized due to my sinus problem, taking hot baths or splashing hot water on face are my favourites. And both of those (bad?) habits were damaging my skin.

Maybe it’s my gut or or my strong grasp in skin care facts, I stopped doing that. And I noticed a change. I started using lukewarm water instead of hot water and my skin was better.

To avoid this skin care mistake: Do not use hot water, instead use lukewarm water to wash your face.

Skin care mistake 2: Not following 60 sec rule while cleansing

Not following 60 sec rule is another skin care mistakes

You would be surprised to know most people wash their face for 15 seconds max. And I was one of them!

Everytime after cleansing, I use toner with cotton ball on my face. Surprisingly I used to noticed a huge amount of product residues on the cotton ball. That made me wonder maybe all those products I am putting on my face are not blending enough, as a result half of those were on my cotton balls as residues.

Then I started cleansing my face for 60 seconds. Believe it or not, in the beginning I used a timer just to have an idea (skin care is not easy!). Now I don’t need it anymore.

From where did I get this idea? Well, it’s not my idea actually. This rule was first tweeted by a LA skin care professional named Nayamka Roberta- Smith which became viral. This face washing rule came of as a result of trial and error and has no scientific study to back it up. But for some weird reasons, it works! I came across to it through one blog and gave it a try.

As soon as I started following this, I noticed less and less product residues on my toner soaked cotton balls. A skin care rule which I followed just out of curiosity, worked!

Now why 60 second is the best way? You can go 60, 90 or even 120 seconds. No harm in that. But make sure you rub the cleanser or face wash at least for 60 seconds. You have to do that to make sure the ingredients are on your face so that they can do what they are supposed to do.

To avoid this skin care mistake: Don’t rush, take at least 60 seconds to gently rub the cleanser on your face so that the ingredients can work properly.

Skin care mistake 3: Skipping face cleaning in the morning

We all know washing our face before we go to bed is MANDATORY. But only few actually bother to clean their face in the morning as well (if you are one of them, the skin care community is proud of you!!!).

I must admit I am not a morning person. It takes at least 2/3 hours for me to come back to reality after I wake up! If you ask my name in early morning, chances are I will tell you a different one. So doing skin care right after I wake up was out of question till last December.

But this year something changed. I was having pimples on my oily zones and I kept asking me what was I doing wrong. Then one day I don’t know why, while brushing I looked into the mirror with my eyes wide open (yes yes I was awake!). I noticed my face looked like I just had an oil bath.

Long story short, I started washing my face in the morning after that. Luckily the pimples bid me goodbye as I started this ritual. Also my skin feels much better whole day.

To avoid this skin care mistake: Wash your face in the morning, no matter what type of skin you have.

You might ask me what difference it makes? The reason behind this skin care fact is simple. While sleeping bacteria from your saliva and oil from your hair gets on your face. Also, if you follow a proper nighttime routine, you are using serums and heavyweight night creams. And these needs to be washed off so that your skin gets ready for the day.

If you have a super dry skin, I would recommend to use either only a hydrating toner or micellar water to wash your face in the morning. And if your skin is oily, it’s even more important for you to wash in the morning. However, always go for a gentle cleanser. Cause you don’t want to strip off the natural oils by too much washing.

Skin care mistake 4: Not Applying serum right after 1 min of washing face

We all love serums. don’t we? They work best in any skin type (If you are new to skin care and wondering what serum is : serums are the concentrated solutions of active ingredients aimed to solve specific skin issues). Serums are easy to use and are applied before moisturizers.

Although serums sound too easy to use, most of the people fail in applying them properly.

It’s better if you use serums right after washing while your face is still damp. Why? Because moist skin absorbs products more quickly than a dry skin. As serums are super concentrated with active ingredients, you have to make sure all the actives penetrate on the skin to have the best result. The more you delay, the drier your skin gets resulting in a bad absorption. Thus always use serums right after washing the face. And don’t delay more than 1 min.

But it is always not possible to have the damp effect. Worry not! In that case, you can use a facial mist. Spray the mist on your face and use serum afterwards. Facial mists are superb to provide the moisty feel anywhere (even when you are travelling) and this nifty skin care fact saved my skin.

To avoid this skin care mistake: Apply serums within 1 minute after washing as your skin is damp that time.

Skin care mistake 5: Not using toners after cleansing

A lot of skin care enthusiasts think toners are just waste of money. But talking from personal experience, NO THEY ARE NOT!

As you all know by now, I love doing skin care. But once in a while I get lazy (guilty!). Last month my lazy soul got so much powerful that I actually skipped toner for a whole week. I was like meh it’s just some solution, what harm will it do if I skip! But trust me I was so wrong. That one lazy decision did cost me two big pimples on my t-zone!

Toners are your rescue if you have oily skin, combination skin with oily t-zone. They are also good for dry skin as there are several toners on market which can provide hydration while removing product residues.

I love toners cause they help my skin to get rid of excess oil along with product residues so my facial skin has no clogged pores leading to pimples.

So don’t fall prey to this common skin care mistake and use toner right after cleansing. You can choose toners depending on your skin type and concerns.

To avoid this skin care mistake: Use a toner, depending on your skin type after cleansing each time.

I had no idea that people used hot water to wash the face. I always thought they used lukewarm water. Apart from that, all the other points are really useful to me.
